Kensington | Complete Refurbishment & Restoration
Amari has been commissioned to undertake a complete shell and core refurbishment of an apartment set within one of Kensington's most iconic mansion blocks — a building type that carries its own particular set of expectations, where generous period proportions meet the practicalities of modern city living. At 2,300 sq ft, the apartment offers considerable scope, and the brief called for a redesign that would honour the character of the block while delivering an entirely reimagined interior behind its walls.

Central to the project is an extensive reconfiguration of the existing floor plan. Rather than working within the constraints of the original layout, the design team has restructured the space to create a more flowing, cohesive sequence of rooms — one where the double reception, kitchen diner, and three bedrooms relate to one another with far greater ease than the apartment's original arrangement allowed. With four bathrooms and a dedicated utility and laundry space, the plan has been developed to support genuinely comfortable day-to-day living at this scale, not simply to preserve period character for its own sake.

The specification reflects the same ambition. A Smallbone kitchen anchors the kitchen diner, chosen for the quality of its cabinetry and its ability to sit comfortably within a period shell without appearing incongruous. Neatsmith wardrobes bring the same level of bespoke joinery into the bedrooms, ensuring storage is both generous and seamlessly integrated. Bathrooms by West
One complete the wet areas, finished with luxury marble to match the level of detail found throughout the rest of the apartment. Notably, the air conditioning system has been specified without exterior condensers — a solution that speaks directly to the constraints of working within a mansion block, where external alterations are rightly subject to close scrutiny.

Beyond the visible specification, the apartment is being fitted with full home automation, supported by extensive, future-proofed audiovisual and cabling infrastructure. This groundwork ensures the property will comfortably accommodate technology as it evolves, rather than requiring disruptive retrofitting further down the line — a detail easy to overlook but essential in a project of this ambition.

Amari's role on this project extends well beyond design and specification. The practice is coordinating the licence to alter on the client's behalf, managing the various third-party professionals involved, and delivering the interior design in full alongside the architectural work — a genuinely end-to-end service for a client and brief the design team considers a privilege to be working on.
