Julie's Just a Step Away

Situated in Clarendon Cross, directly opposite the renowned Julie's restaurant and occupying a prominent corner position, this former eatery has been entirely transformed into a triplex penthouse apartment complete with its own sky garden. Originally just 1,800 sq ft, planning permission was sought and secured to reinstate a previously damaged parapet and add an entirely new floor, expanding the property to a substantial 2,700 sq ft across three levels.

The building itself carried real architectural presence even before the transformation began, with sixteen large sash windows spanning the original two floors and striking exterior period mouldings. Yet years of neglect had taken their toll, and by the time it was acquired, the imposing structure had fallen into disrepair, with virtually all of its internal period features stripped away over time.

Completely gutted from the outset, the project called for a total refurbishment, rebuilding the interior from first principles while working within the constraints of a genuinely characterful shell.

At the heart of the new layout sits a first floor, 50-foot-long open-plan kitchen, dining, and living room — a space designed to make full use of the building's generous width and window arrangement.

A bespoke Bulthaup kitchen fitted with Gaggenau appliances anchors this floor, set against wide oak floorboards and Miles and Wilde cornicing, with a striking 2-metre ribbon fireplace providing a dramatic focal point along the length of the room.

Connecting the three levels is an entirely new bespoke staircase, rising from ground floor level through to the newly added third floor and its sky garden above. The second floor houses a 600 sq ft master suite, complete with a sumptuous en-suite bathroom and Poliform walk-in wardrobes, alongside a second bedroom served by its own family bathroom — giving the apartment a clear separation between principal and secondary accommodation.

The new third floor introduces a versatile multi-purpose room with its own kitchenette and en-suite, opening directly onto a roof terrace with panoramic views across London — arguably the apartment's standout feature, and one made possible entirely by the newly granted additional storey. Throughout the property, Crestron home automation governs every system via both in-wall units and mobile or tablet control, managing the audiovisual setup, heating and cooling, lighting, security, and door entry from a single integrated platform.

The specification throughout matches the ambition of the architecture. Italian bathrooms fitted with Vola sanitary ware are offset by tadelakt polished plaster and handmade tiles from Fired Earth, while bespoke joinery runs throughout to tie the apartment's various levels together. Reinstated Miles and Wilde period features sit deliberately alongside contemporary detailing, creating a considered dialogue between old and new rather than favouring one over the other.

The result is a genuinely striking transformation — a once-forgotten corner building, stripped of its history, reborn as a wonderfully detailed triplex penthouse that finally does justice to its prominent position opposite one of Notting Hill's most recognisable addresses.
