Traditional Meets Contemporary
This proposal for a new-build 3,500 ft² family home in the heart of Notting Hill sought to transform an existing 1,100 ft² 1950s artist’s studio into a substantial, highly considered contemporary residence. Located along one of W11’s wide, sweeping roads and surrounded by grand period properties, the existing infill building had become increasingly disconnected from its surroundings. The brief was therefore to create a new home that responded sensitively to the character of the area while maximising the potential of the site and its exceptional 75-foot south-facing garden.

The sensitivity of the location, with its proximity to numerous listed and historically significant buildings, required careful consideration of the proposed building’s scale, massing, proportions and architectural language. The resulting design is arranged over four floors, making intelligent use of the natural changes in level across the site. This approach allowed the new property to blend traditional architectural cues with contemporary planning and detailing, creating a home that feels both established and distinctly modern.

Externally, the design takes the form of a traditional period property, carefully proportioned to sit comfortably within the streetscape. Reclaimed London stock brick, lead, glass and natural stone detailing reinforce the connection with the surrounding architecture, while selective contemporary interventions give the house its own identity. Floor-to-ceiling glazing and carefully positioned skylights introduce generous levels of natural light, creating a subtle contrast between the traditional exterior and the crisp, contemporary interiors.

Internally, the property has been designed around modern family life, entertaining and wellness. The accommodation includes five bedrooms and six bathrooms, with generous bedroom suites positioned across the upper levels. The principal bedroom occupies the rear of the house and benefits from views across the landscaped south-facing garden. Throughout, the specification combines luxury materials with highly crafted detailing.
