Putting Back the Style

This beautiful raised ground floor apartment had been neglected for some time before our designers breathed new life into it. Over the years, the majority of the property's original period features had been stripped away, while the existing layout no longer reflected how our client actually wanted to live. At 1,000 sq ft, the apartment presented a familiar challenge: a compact period footprint that needed to work considerably harder than its original plan allowed.
 

We began by completely reconfiguring the layout, taking the opportunity to reassess how the two bedrooms, two bathrooms, double reception, and kitchen/dining room related to one another. Rather than working around the constraints of the existing plan, the redesign prioritised flow and function, ensuring every room earned its place within the apartment's modest but well-proportioned footprint.
 

Alongside this reconfiguration, we set about sympathetically reinstating a series of classic period features that had been lost over time. Decorative panel moulding, period cornice, and a restored fireplace were reintroduced throughout the principal rooms, while Victorian-style bathroom suites brought a sense of historical authenticity back to both bathrooms — details that immediately reconnected the apartment with the character of its period origins.
 

The attention to detail extended well beyond restoration work. A fantastic handmade kitchen fitted with Siemens appliances anchors the kitchen/dining room, while jumbo chevron flooring runs throughout to visually unite the principal spaces. In the bedrooms, bespoke contemporary joinery in matt lacquer and tobacco walnut interiors was introduced to offset the period detailing elsewhere, striking a considered balance between old and new rather than favouring one over the other.

Lighting played an equally important role in bringing the design together. Our team selected a tiered crystal chandelier for the bedroom and a vintage Sputnik pendant for the living room, each chosen not only for its striking visual presence but for the way it floods its respective room with light — transforming spaces that had previously felt dim and neglected into bright, welcoming rooms full of character.
 

Underfloor heating and full home automation were integrated throughout, ensuring the apartment meets contemporary expectations for comfort and convenience without ever detracting from its restored period charm.
 

This was a lovely project to work on, set within one of our favourite London locations, and one that beautifully demonstrates how sensitive restoration and considered contemporary detailing can work hand in hand. To top it all, our client could not have been happier with the result — a period apartment that finally lives up to its address in leafy Holland Park.
